Hi,
I have narrowed my Compact TLB seach to the above. Can anyone offer comments on the JD TLB, esp. the 46 BH - is it still an experiment or does it work? Haven't seen any feedback about it. I have about 2 acres to maintain, some general rock moving landscaping and tilling. I worry that the JD might be too big but I like its loader & BH capacity. What else should I consider between the two?
I am in Lakes Region of NH, would also appreciate comments on dealers.
This board contains a wealth of knowledge, thanks to all who contribute.

The 46 back hoe works just fine. The BX has a better "feel" on the B/H controls and is a bit more forgiving to learn on.
On the counter-balance, as you have noted, you get a less capable loader, a rougher ride and a weaker hydraulic system with the BX.
Having had both a BX22 and a 4115 TLB... I would have to say that the green machine is a better overall package..... but I suspect I would be just as happy with a B2410/2710 TLB.
On the size issue: I had a 4100 also and there is very little difference in maneuverability between a 4110 and the BX. They are nearly the same width and there is only 4 inches difference in the wheel base.
The 4110 comes with more "stuff" that you will appreciate down the road like split brakes and a position control 3 point and more versatile tire selection.

DRankin, it looks like you're in a position to make this comparison! It seems that the 4110 will be the way I go. You're right about the wheelbase. The 4110 seems a lot bigger because of its tires I guess.
I've got a lot of rocks to dig out and move, lots of stumps to pull out and some ground to till. I also need to move some good sized rocks out of about 5' of water, at the edge of a stone retaining wall. I think the extra loader and BH capacity will come in handy for that.
I'm still concerned about that 46 BH though. Why is there a step on only one side? Unlike the main tractor seat, on the BH there doesn't seem to be any reason not to be able to get on or off on the right side. Also the grab rail near the BH controls didn't seem to be mounted correctly on the unit I saw - it seemed to bow the sheet metal valve cover panel out toward the rear. I just wonder if JD has all the bugs out of this thing? Does your 46 BH go on and off easily? Any issues with it?
What do you think about antifreeze vs. calcium in the tires? I don't want the tires or rims to rust but it seems the JD dealer hasn't put antifreeze in any tires yet. It would be an extra charge, is it worth it? ....

The 46 back hoe is new to Deere but not to the market. It is made by Ameriquip and is a slightly scaled down version of the JD 47 hoe, which has been on the market for some years. The sub-frame is unique to Deere, but the hoe has been around a while I think.
I don't know why there is a step on only one side, and it does not cause problems for me at all. The seat latch is on the same side and after a while it just seems natural to get off the tractor on that side, adjust the seats and step unto the back hoe platform.
I too thought the grab rail looked a little flimsy, but after almost a year of hoisting my nearly 300# on and off it is holding up just fine.
The only minor problems I have had have been new/stiff controls, which are getting better with use and lubrication and there was a bit too much slop where some of the major components were pinned together. I am guessing the dealer didn't use enough shims during assembly and it is an easily fixed or avoided problem.
It mounts/dismounts with relative ease. I was a bit faster with the BX but the components were lighter, smaller and easier to handle and I had the BX longer so there was more practice.
It is a good product and it will serve you well.
As far as filling tires, I went through that phase. After a couple of punctures and the experience of manhandling a 200 pound tire out of the pick-up and back onto the tractor, I went to aftermarket wheel weights and have not looked back.

I'd have to say if the JD didn't out operate a BX I'd be looking for a new one unless we can justify more for less. Try looking at the same frame sizes to compare that is the only way. You should be into a B-7610 Kubota chassis. ....
